Should I use Shoutcast or Icecast?

Both Icecast and Shoutcast will do a great job of broadcasting your radio station to the world and they will both let your station be used in website apps and radio apps like TuneIn. There are a few differences though. Shoutcast has a more popular directory giving you a slightly better chance of having your station found by new listeners.

However, Shoutcast is a commercial product however and requires a license from Shoutcast if you want to broadcast at over 128kbps MP3 or use a different CODEC other than MP3. Icecast is open source and free so has no limits on your radio station bitrate. Icecast-KH is a branch of Icecast that adds a few extra features.

We’re big fans of open-source software at Hippynet so we prefer Icecast-KH, but the choice is yours.
